Plot

While searching the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young aliens come across the most terrifying life form in the universe. See how the Alien movies rank according to IMDb user ratings. Director Fede Alvarez approached the special effects team of Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures and miniatures were used whenever possible to help form the basis for later visual effect work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, their blood hangs in the air in long, indistinct patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form spherical shapes that don’t spread out into long flat chunks like in the movie.

Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes menacing, as in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene. The logo itself goes through a static burst and turns green. Introducing Nerdrotic: The Acolyte: Force is Female CONFIRMED? The Death of Theaters – Real BBC @MauLer @HeelvsBabyface (2024). Positives first – Good action, great practical special effects and great visuals.

The action was exciting and had some scary moments

Director Fede Alvarez and his production team captured the dark atmosphere and thrilling action of Alien almost perfectly. The use of practical effects and realistic miniatures was so refreshing to see in this era of CGI excess. Seeing a fully realized Xenomorph in the flesh surprised me, and the space scenes were beautiful. This camera work, visual presentation and use of quality CGI, although limited where necessary, were excellent. Negatives – Mediocre acting, nostalgia story, dialogue copied and pasted from the better Alien movies, and the inclusion of lore elements from the worse prequels that you wouldn’t want in the official canon. Also, the reveal of the villain was an «oh, get out of here» moment, I’ll say no more.

To no purpose

Apart from the wonderful lead actress Spaeny playing her role, the other actors/characters were just fine. I found the story about nostalgia boring, eye-rolling and almost breaking the fourth wall, it ruined the immersion for me. I’m starting to tire of sequels/prequels that rely too much on lazy «memories» to allow the casual audience to leave Alien fans confused, almost annoyed. To be honest, that’s just lazy scripting and disrespectful to the other Alien movies that did it first! Also, the overuse of Sigourney Weaver’s copy-and-paste dialogue from the best Alien movies was very weird. 20th Century Studios should have called it Alien: Remember because you relied too much on «oh, Do you remember this part…» Ultimately, adding all that controversial and franchise-damaging Prometheus nonsense to the movie was frustrating.

Alien: Romulus, an above-average Alien blockbuster, the fourth best film in the series

I hated all that garbage about the origin of Space Jockey and the creation of the Xenomorph. And don’t get me started on the villain, I don’t want to spoil anything, but it was ridiculously lazy. I think placing the movie between the first two movies was a mistake because you have to make your movie fit into the established continuity of the franchise with all the necessary tie-ins and plot twists to make it fit. They should have made a sequel years after Alien: Resurrection and started a new Alien saga long after Weaver’s adventures (and with better writers). This had the potential to perform with Aliens, but was a letdown due to disappointing characters, a lackluster «remember-berry» story, and a poor script. The final season of «What We Do in the Shadows» is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
